Nightmare on Elm St.
I left the apartment with a sinking heart. My desperation to move had blinded me to reality the night Iâd toured it. I slogged up to Graceâs front door and knocked. She had to have the place cleaned or I wouldn't move in. It was the only leverage I could think of. If the place was a pit, they couldnât expect me to take it. Could they?
The door opened, but instead of Grace standing there, it was a tall, skinny blond. A familiar tall, skinny blond. Her eyes widened in surprise when she saw me. âArenât you Norma Gene, Chadâs friend?â she said.
âImogene,â I said. âAnd youâre McKenzie.â She was Chadâs new flame. The one Iâd met at Neutron.
âWhat are youââ we both said at once. I let her have the floor.
âWhat are you doing here?â she asked.
I held up the key chain. âIâm renting the studio.â
âOh, Mom said she had a new tenant. I didnât know it was you.â
Mom? Great. One more thing to add to no money, no stove, a disgusting refrigerator, a bathroom camouflaged for jungle combat, and a band of confused, wandering senior gypsies across the streetâChadâs girlfriend was my landlordâs daughter. âSmall world,â I said.
We stood looking at each other for an awkward moment, then she reached for the key. âWhen do you move in?â
âThatâs the thing,â I said. âI canât move in until the place is cleaned.â
McKenzieâs eyebrows lifted, and her lips pursed. âDid you put down a deposit?â
âYes, butââ
âI think the lease says you agree to take the place as is.â
âMaybe, but when I signed it, I hadnât seen the inside of the refrigerator.â
McKenzie shrugged as if to say tough luck. âIâll tell my parents.â
âCan I talk to Grace?â
âSheâs not here.â
âHow about your dad?â
âHeâs not here, either.â
âWell, let them know, would you? Either the place is cleaned, or Iâll have to back out of the lease.â
âYou wonât get your deposit back.â
There was no point in arguing with McKenzie. She wasnât the decision maker. I nodded a goodbye and walked away. Her voice stopped me before I got to the street. âHowâs your toe?â
How did she know about my toe? I turned. âGetting better, thanks. How did you know Iâd injured it?â
âChad told me.â
I must have looked confused, because she explained. âHe told me you couldnât dance in the contest because you hurt your toe. He was upset about it.â
âHe was?â
âYeah, but heâs over it. Iâm his partner now.â She flashed me a smug smile. âHe said heâd asked you first, for old times' sake and all that.â
âFor old times' sake?â I parroted. Chad had never done anything for old times', new times', anything's, or anybody's sake but his own in his life. Chad did things for Chad.
âHe said it was all for the best.â A hand fluttered to her mouth. âI mean, not that you got hurt or anything, but dancing with me instead.â
I didnât know what to say, so I headed for my car. My cell rang as soon as I put on my seat belt.
